There are several reasons why a cat may avoid using the litter box. The first and most common reason is a dirty litter box. British cats, in particular, are very sensitive to cleanliness. You have probably noticed that as soon as you clean the litter box, the cat immediately goes to use it.

While you may consider the litter box clean even with a couple of clumps left, your cat may strongly disagree. In such cases, the cat may choose to relieve itself next to the litter box instead.
